Healing Women of Color

The Mask

Episode Summary

In this episode, we unpack the painful reality of loving someone whose words never matched their actions. The Mask is a raw conversation about: * false narratives after a breakup, * emotional manipulation, * covert, malignant, and grandiose narcissism, * performative healing, * and the confusion that comes when someone suddenly becomes “everything you asked for” only after you leave. We discuss how some people change their image—but not their character—and why healing requires us to stop falling in love with potential while ignoring patterns. This episode is also about empowerment. About choosing peace over performance. Truth over illusion. Healing over attachment. Because this season, we are becoming women who: * trust our discernment, * protect our peace, * stop abandoning ourselves for love, * and choose relationships rooted in consistency, accountability, and emotional safety. 🎧 The Mask is for the woman reclaiming herself after emotional confusion. You are not crazy for what you experienced. And you are not weak for finally walking away.

[INTRO MUSIC FADES IN]

Hey beautiful people… welcome back to Healing Women of Color, the podcast where we have raw conversations about healing, emotional wellness, self-worth, relationships, and becoming the healthiest version of ourselves—mind, body, and spirit.

I’m your host, Kamaria… and today’s episode is called:

“The Mask.”

And whew… this conversation?
This one is personal.
This one is deep.
And I know so many women are going to feel seen through this episode.

Because today we’re talking about what happens when someone presents themselves as one person… but behind closed doors, they become somebody completely different.

We’re talking about:

So if you’ve ever sat there wondering:

“How are you suddenly healthy now?”
“How are you suddenly emotionally mature now?”
“How are you suddenly posting about peace, loyalty, healing, and accountability… when you brought chaos into my life almost every day?”

Baby… this episode is for you.

Let’s talk about The Mask.

SEGMENT 1 — THE PERSON THEY PRETENDED TO BE

One of the hardest things to process after an emotionally unhealthy relationship is realizing you were not just grieving a person…

You were grieving the illusion of who you believed they were.

Because some people know exactly how to speak the language of love.

They know how to say:
“I’ll protect you.”
“I’ll never hurt you.”
“You come before everybody.”
“We’ll laugh every day.”
“I’m different.”
“You’re safe with me.”

But words without consistent behavior are manipulation at worst… and emotional immaturity at best.

And I think what hurts the most is that many of us stayed because we believed the potential.

We saw glimpses of softness.
Glimpses of vulnerability.
Glimpses of who they could become.

And as nurturing women, especially women who love deeply, we often hold onto those moments hoping consistency will eventually follow.

But healthy love is not built on occasional good moments surrounded by repeated emotional harm.

Healthy love is consistent.

SEGMENT 2 — THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF THE MASK

Now I want to talk briefly about different ways narcissistic or emotionally manipulative behavior can show up.

And I want to say this carefully:
Not everybody has Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

But many people absolutely operate through narcissistic traits and harmful emotional patterns.

Covert Narcissism

This is often the hardest one to identify.

Because covert narcissism can look quiet, wounded, misunderstood, even emotionally deep.

But underneath it is:

These are often the people who hurt you quietly while making themselves appear innocent publicly.

Grandiose Narcissism

This mask is louder.

This person often needs admiration, control, attention, superiority, or image validation.

They may:

And when relationships end, image management becomes extremely important.

Malignant Narcissism

This is where emotional harm can become deeply destructive.

This type may involve:

And one thing I need people to understand is this:

Just because someone can appear charming publicly does not mean they are emotionally safe privately.

A mask can be beautiful and still dangerous.

SEGMENT 3 — THE FALSE NARRATIVE AFTER YOU LEAVE

Now let’s talk about the part that confuses people the most.

The sudden transformation.

You leave the relationship… and suddenly:
they’re healed.
they’re emotionally aware.
they’re peaceful.
they’re posting quotes about loyalty and growth.
they’re presenting themselves as the ideal partner.

And it makes you angry because you’re thinking:

“Where was this version when I was crying?”
“Where was this emotional intelligence when I needed honesty?”
“Why does everybody else get the version of you I begged for?”

And let me say this clearly:

Sometimes people do grow.

But sometimes people are not transforming—they are rebranding.

There’s a difference.

Real transformation requires:

Not social media captions.

Not image management.

Not performative healing.

And if someone only becomes “healthy” once access to you is gone… that says something.

SEGMENT 4 — HOW THE MASK AFFECTS YOU

Relationships like this can make you question yourself deeply.

You begin wondering:
“Was I too emotional?”
“Was I asking for too much?”
“Did I overreact?”
“Maybe I’m the problem.”

And over time, confusion becomes normal.

You start abandoning your intuition trying to hold onto the relationship.

But let me tell you something:

Your body remembers what your mind tries to romanticize away.

Your anxiety remembered.
Your tears remembered.
Your exhaustion remembered.
Your loneliness remembered.

You were carrying the emotional weight of loving someone who prioritized appearance over accountability.

And healing begins when you stop arguing with reality.

SEGMENT 5 — 7 STEPS TO RECLAIM YOURSELF

So now I want to leave you with 7 healing steps for the woman rebuilding herself after loving someone behind a mask.

1. Believe patterns, not promises

Anybody can say beautiful words.

But patterns reveal character.

Stop holding onto rare moments while ignoring repeated behavior.

2. Stop romanticizing potential

Potential is not commitment.
Potential is not consistency.

Date reality—not fantasy.

3. Rebuild trust with yourself

Your intuition was speaking.

Your discomfort mattered.

Stop gaslighting yourself to protect somebody else’s image.

4. Stop overexplaining your pain

Some people understand exactly what they did.

They just don’t want accountability.

Closure will not always come from their understanding.

5. Protect your peace relentlessly

Peace is not boring.
Peace is safety.

Stop confusing emotional chaos with passion.

6. Let the mask fall without chasing revenge

You do not need to expose everybody.

Truth reveals itself through patterns eventually.

Focus on your healing.

7. Choose yourself fully

Choose yourself:

SEGMENT 6 — EMPOWERMENT & HEALING

Now let me speak directly to the woman listening right now who feels exhausted emotionally.

The woman who kept giving chances.
The woman who kept hoping.
The woman who kept trying to save a relationship that was draining her spirit.

I need you to hear me clearly:

You are not hard to love.

You were just trying to receive healthy love from somebody who was not healthy enough to give it.

And this season?

This season we are becoming women who:

This version of us no longer begs for consistency.

We require it.

We no longer chase emotionally unavailable people hoping our love will heal them.

We choose ourselves first.

And let me say this:

The mask was never your fault.

Your softness was not your weakness.
Your hope was not your weakness.
Your love was genuine.

But healing means learning that love should never require self-destruction to maintain it.
